The Story
The "Piano Player" is a highlight of the "Monkey Chapel", a series of hand-painted collectible figures by Johann Joachim Kaendler. His intention was to hold up an ironic mirror to courtly society. The monkey as a motif was very popular at the time, so Kaendler also chose it as a motif for his handicrafts. The figure "Piano Player" is special in that it shows two monkeys at once: one carries the piano on his back, the other monkey sits on it and plays the piano. The entire figurine is handmade and hand-painted, so that each of the total of 21 collectible figurines is unique and the result of the best craftsmanship.
